What is a basic check?

A Basic DBS Check is a type of background check that reviews an individual’s criminal history by accessing records held on the Police National Computer (PNC). It reveals any unspent convictions, cautions, warnings, or reprimands. There are no industry or sector restrictions, and anyone can request one for any purpose.

Also known as a Basic Disclosure, this check provides a certificate detailing relevant information in line with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. Under this Act, certain convictions or cautions become ‘spent’ after a set period and will no longer appear on the certificate.
